KANO (North-West, Nigeria) — A Non Governmental Organization, Nutrition International, has extended it orientation programme to students and health workers to take a lead in championing calls for practice of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers.
The State Coordinator of the organization, Mrs. Victoria Agommuo while speaking at the programme to commemorate the 2024 world breastfeeding week in Kano, said the students as future advocates and the frontline health workers can provide the much needed support to educate mothers and families in the communities on exclusive breastfeeding.
Mrs. Agommuo said the orientation program became imperative to equip them with knowledge and tools to effectively promote practice of exclusive breastfeeding.
According to her, “Our mission today is to equip you, our frontline health workers and future advocates, with the knowledge and tools necessary to promote breastfeeding effectively. By understanding the benefits, challenges, and best practices, you can provide the much-needed support to mothers and families in our communities.
“To our health workers, you are the cornerstone of this initiative. Your role in educating and supporting mothers is invaluable. Through your dedication, you can help mothers overcome challenges, provide accurate information, and offer encouragement. Let us continue to advocate for policies and practices within our healthcare facilities that promote and support breastfeeding.
“To our students, you are the future leaders and change-makers. Your engagement and enthusiasm are crucial in spreading the message of the importance of breastfeeding.
“By participating in this orientation, you are taking the first step towards becoming informed advocates who can influence your peers, families, and communities. Remember, the knowledge you gain here today will empower you to make a difference in the lives of countless mothers and children.
“As we commemorate World Breastfeeding Week, let us also recognize the need for supportive environments. This includes workplaces that provide maternity leave, breastfeeding breaks, and suitable facilities for breastfeeding or expressing milk. We must work together to create a society where breastfeeding is not only encouraged but is also seen as a natural and essential part of life.
“Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. It provides essential nutrients, strengthens the immune system, and fosters a unique bond between mother and child. However, despite its well-documented benefits, breastfeeding rates in many parts of the world, including our state, remain below the recommended levels,” Mrs. Agommuo however stated.
Meanwhile, the students and healthcare workers were drawn from various higher institutions and Primary Health care facilities respectively.
