Kano Chapel chair calls for stronger media collaboration, professionalism

KANO (North-West, Nigeria) — The Chairman of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Murtala Adewale, has called on journalists to strengthen unity, professionalism and collaboration to advance the journalism profession and promote peace, progress and national development.

Adewale made the call during the Chapel’s 12-Month Stewardship Presentation and Celebration held at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano, where he presented the scorecard of his administration’s first year in office.

He said the achievements recorded within the period were the result of teamwork, commitment and the unwavering support of members, stressing that the Chapel would continue to prioritise members’ welfare, professional development and institutional growth.

“Our responsibility is to remain united and work together in promoting ethical journalism and building greater synergy among media professionals for the progress of the profession and the prosperity of our country,” he said.

Presenting the stewardship report, Adewale highlighted several milestones achieved by the executive, including the establishment of a cooperative society with an initial capital base of ₦10 million, the facilitation of ₦8.5 million in loan facilities for members, welfare support, a ₦2 million medical intervention for a member, subsidized Ramadan food distribution worth ₦2.5 million, and the securing of an additional ₦30,000 monthly special gesture for members.

Other achievements, according to him, include the provision of unlimited 5G internet service at the chapel, installation of DSTV, office sanitation services, procurement of an electric kettle for members, reactivation of the chapel’s bank account, creation of a functional Facebook page, provision of refreshments, organisation of a four-day retreat in Kaduna, institution of Distinguished Awards of Excellence, installation of an Olympic-standard table tennis facility and facilitation of two Hajj slots for members.

Speaking at the event, Associate Professor Sule Ya’u Sule commended the leadership of the Chapel for what he described as an outstanding performance within one year, noting that the administration had demonstrated transparency, accountability and commitment to members’ welfare.

Also speaking, a former Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council and National Trustee of the union, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, praised the executive for documenting its achievements through a stewardship presentation, describing the initiative as a commendable tradition that promotes accountability and institutional memory.

The Chairman of the NUJ Online Chapel, Abdulkadir Dangambo, also spoke at the event, calling for greater unity and synergy among journalists to strengthen the profession and contribute to Nigeria’s peace, progress and prosperity.

Representatives of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), including Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim and Abdullateef Sadiq, congratulated the Chapel on the successful presentation of its one-year stewardship report and urged members to sustain the spirit of professionalism.

Other dignitaries at the ceremony included representatives of the Head of Service, the Director-General, Media and Publicity to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, members of the NUJ Kano State Council, executives of the Online Chapel, Government House Correspondents’ Chapel, Information Chapel, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), former NUJ chairmen, veteran journalists, and other media stakeholders.

The event also featured the induction of two new members into the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel and provided an opportunity for journalists and stakeholders to review the administration’s achievements and reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the chapel and the journalism profession.
