KANO (North-West, Nigeria) — Salisu Ibrahim-Mohammed, a lawmaker representing Doguwa Constituency in Kano State, has urged the State Government to construct and rehabilitate roads and bridges linking Doguwa Local Government Area with five neighbouring states.
He made the call while addressing newsmen on Saturday over infrastructural challenges affecting his constituents and surrounding communities.
Ibrahim-Mohammed, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Rural and Community Development, specifically requested the construction of the Doka-Riruwai road and Doguwa ring road linking Kano-Jos road through Dadinkowa, Dariya, Maraku, Maganda and Riruwai.
He said completing the projects would ease transportation, enhance economic activities, improve revenue generation and strengthen connectivity between Kano and neighbouring states, particularly during the rainy season.
Ibrahim-Mohammed commended Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State for responding to concerns over the Gada-Biyu bridge on Kano-Jos road, which he said was at risk of collapsing.
He recalled presenting a motion before the House on the bridge’s condition, adding that media reports subsequently drew government attention to the plight of residents and motorists.
The lawmaker said the bridge, located near Falgore Game Reserve, was particularly important because it connects Kano with Plateau, Benue, Taraba, Bauchi and Nasarawa states.
He said flooding during the rainy season often disrupts movement, leaving motorists and commuters stranded for several hours because vehicles could not safely cross the affected section.
According to him, engineers recently visited the bridge, a development that brought relief to residents who had experienced prolonged delays whenever heavy rainfall caused flooding around the route.
He said the Kano-Jos road remained economically significant because many travellers from neighbouring states use it to access Kano for commercial activities, generating revenue for businesses and government.
Ibrahim-Mohammed said the Doka-Riruwai road would connect communities to Doguwa Local Government headquarters, while the proposed ring road would provide an alternative route around the local government.
He appealed to the state government to prioritise the three projects, saying that their completion would address major infrastructural challenges confronting Doguwa communities and improve transportation across the area.
