KANO (North-West, Nigeria) — Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and other media organisations through sustained capacity-building programmes and policies aimed at strengthening the journalism profession.

Governor Yusuf made the pledge while receiving an Award of Excellence from the Kano Online Media Chapel of the NUJ at the Government House, Kano.

The governor commended members of the Chapel for their professionalism and dedication to promoting truth, public enlightenment, and responsible journalism, describing the media as a critical partner in democratic governance and sustainable development.

He expressed appreciation to the Kano Online Media Chapel for the honour, saying the recognition would inspire his administration to do more in advancing media development across the state.

“Our administration will continue to support the NUJ and other media organisations through initiatives that build the capacity of journalists and promote professionalism. A vibrant and credible media is essential for good governance, peace, and development,” Governor Yusuf said.

He also urged journalists to remain committed to the ethics of the profession by ensuring accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in their reports, stressing that responsible journalism is indispensable to building public trust and strengthening democracy.

The award presentation, held at the Council Chamber of the Government House, was attended by members of the Kano State Executive Council and other top government officials.

Presenting the award, Chairman of the Kano Online Media Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Dangambo, said the honour reflected the governor’s outstanding contributions to media development and his unwavering support for journalists in the state.

Dangambo noted that the administration’s investment in capacity building had equipped members of the Chapel with modern reporting skills, enabling them to meet the evolving demands of digital journalism while promoting professionalism, accuracy, and ethical reporting.

He thanked the governor for recognising the vital role of online media in promoting transparency, public awareness, and democratic governance, describing the award as a token of appreciation from members who have benefited directly from the administration’s media-friendly policies.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, praised the Kano Online Media Chapel for its commitment to the profession and excellence.

Waiya described the media as an indispensable partner in governance, emphasising that credible and ethical reporting remains essential to keeping citizens informed and promoting government accountability.
